Even one of Austria’s most renowned jewellers started out small. Read the success story of the rise of a jewellery dynasty over the course of more than 100 years. From the ambitious journeyman goldsmith to the award of the honorable title of k.u.k. Purveyor to the Court to the redesign of the business premises on the Graben.

The first jeweler in the Heldwein family dynasty is born: Anton Heldwein (1865 – 1937). The Heldwein family itself probably came from Neustadt an der Weinstraße in the Palatinate, but Anton was trained as a goldsmith in Vienna. He worked for the Schwippel company. He completed his master craftsman’s examination with his brother-in-law, the jeweler Julius Hügler, and soon became managing director there. Shortly afterwards, he laid the foundations for a successful history, in 1902 to be precise.

Anton Heldwein and his wife Lotte take the plunge and set up their own business.
Incidentally, Lotte herself, born Siess, comes from an influential Viennese family of jewelers, which is all the less damaging as she probably also provides the necessary financial support for the joint venture. Anton Heldwein now began to design his own pieces of jewelry, but also worked closely with renowned artists from the famous Wiener Werkstätte. From this point onwards, one can speak of the ‘meteoric rise’ of the Heldwein family.

Anton Heldwein receives the title of k.u.k. Purveyor to the Court. It is a great distinction and a great honor for the young couple to be able to supply the imperial family as customers. However, the actual main customer is the Archduke of Austria-Este, Franz Ferdinand. He likes to order jewelry and fine gifts from Heldwein.

The next generation takes the helm. After the death of the old Heldwein, his son Hans takes over the business with great enthusiasm. But the war does not spare the Heldwein family. Hans has to go to the front and his mother runs the business together with his brother Walter. They all survive.

The relocation of the business opens a new chapter in the family’s history, moving from the posh Milchgasse in Vienna’s city center to the even posher Graben on the corner of Bräunerstraße. The Heldweins and their customers like it here so much that they stay right there. Until today.

Everything is going well. But then…
Russian soldiers plunder the business from top to bottom. In the years that followed, the company struggled to get back on its feet. In these lean years – also for the customers – many prefer to have their old pieces of jewelry reworked instead of buying new ones. Atelier Heldwein thus finally becomes the heart of the company.

Heldwein brings his son Karlhans into the management. During these years of the economic miracle, the name Heldwein becomes known far beyond Vienna – through its jewelry fashion shows with the city’s most renowned
couturièrs – such as Adlmüller.

Karlhans Heldwein and his wife Ulli now run the Haus am Graben. Together they survive the turbulent 70s and 80s with dignity and style and hand over a flourishing business to their son Anton Heldwein.

Anton Heldwein takes over the management of the company. After completing a degree in economics, national and international experience in the trade and additional training in management and as a gemologist, he successfully leads the traditional company into the 21st century. And he rebuilds.

The store on Graben now has a completely redesigned, modern ambience that is both open and discreet. Married for the second time, Anton Heldwein, his wife Barbara and their 6 children continue to write the successful Viennese family history.

The Pomellato boutique in Vienna was opened in 2013, and Sebastian Schroeter joined the company as Store Manager at the same time. With his experience and expertise in jewelry management, he played a crucial role in building and successfully establishing the boutique in the Viennese luxury and jewelry scene. This position marked the beginning of his many years of work at the company.

The partnership with the Vienna Opera Ball was launched in 2015. Since then
, Juwelier Heldwein has provided the young gentlemen’s committee with exclusive cufflinks every year. This long-standing collaboration is an integral part of the Opera Ball and underlines the close connection between the company and this important social event in Vienna.

In 2020, the store was extensively redesigned and renovated. As part of this
redesign, the previous Silver Gallery has been transformed into an exclusive Patek Philippe Salon. This change underlines the company’s ambition to offer its customers an even more sophisticated and luxurious shopping experience while strengthening the presence of Patek Philippe, one of the most prestigious watch brands in the world, at Heldwein.

Modern and innovative in its approach, the new campaign in 2021 focused on the
Heldwein atelier and the exclusive Heldwein hallmark. With this fresh, creative
portrayal of the company’s craftsmanship and tradition, the campaign not only impressed
, but also won Juwelier Heldwein two out-of-home awards.

In 2024, Sebastian Schroeter ushered in the fifth generation of Juwelier Heldwein and took on a new, important role as Managing Director. From this year onwards, he actively supports Anton Heldwein in leading the traditional family business into a successful future. With fresh ideas and his many years of experience in the company, he is making an important contribution to further strengthening Heldwein between tradition and innovation.

First-class, individual services

At Heldwein, great importance is attached to providing customers with expert and very personal advice. For Anton Heldwein, this is the calling card and leitmotif of his company. Behind the scenes, a highly qualified team of goldsmiths, gemmologists, bead makers, engravers and sales consultants. This is where Atelier Heldwein’s new designs are created. This is where they think, draw, plan, build, solder, cut and file. But also repaired and reworked.
